Marietta kinda prides itself on being an old town, founded in 1788 by Rufus Putnam. First settlement in the Ohio Territory. I’m actually in a documentary about it, (albeit as a very young extra, with only two scenes).

I think a lot of towns and cities have pretty cool courthouses because people used to think it was important that public buildings and bridges have a certain aesthetic value and were willing to pay for it. This is ours.

Here’s ours. Originally the southern gates (Botchard Gate) to the city, the West Tower here is the old court house used up until quite recently.
Built in 1542-45, under orders of King Henry VIII by Stephen von Haschenperg.
This is the West Tower, across the road is the East Tower.
The West Tower was rebuilt in 1810-17.
The prison was to the rear of the West Tower, until the last couple of years housed the County Council offices (another form of robbery).

Lol.
There’s a lot of history around these walls going back a long way I won’t bore you with.

In America, 200 years is a long time; in Britain, 200 miles is a long distance.

This is why the west coast sucks. No real older buildings.
The oldest building in my province (BC) is like some shed in my village. It’s BS.

What I find really interesting is that Carlisle, Cumberland, PA which is named after my home city of Carlisle, Cumbria (formerly Cumberland), England. Was built around an army garrison as was ours.
Also had a jail which later became county offices too.
So many similarities from inception to near present day.

Well, your parliament buildings are still pretty attractive.

Oh for sure. And I spent some time in Halifax last summer. Buildings there predate Canada or the USA
